FROM THE DESK OF SHANE CORY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE LIBERTARIAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE
Dear friend,
In June of 2005, the Libertarian Party released a comprehensive exit strategy for Iraq and presented it to the Bush administration and congressional leadership.
Had our exit strategy for Iraq been adopted at that time, then today, our troops would be safe on U.S. soil and the Iraqi people would be in charge of their own fate.
Unfortunately, our plan was not adopted and instead, our troops and the people in Iraq are in the same position they were in when the plan was released... if not worse.
There is one positive development that has taken place since June of 2005. The American people are waking up to the realization that Iraq was an unnecessary and harmful action. Now, over 50% of Americans believe that the invasion of Iraq was "not worth it."
The Libertarian Party knew that the invasion of Iraq wasn't "worth it" long before the Bush administration decided to preemptively invade the nation.
Why did the members and leaders of the Libertarian Party know this?
Because the non-initiation of force has been a founding principle of our Party since its birth in 1971.
Libertarians are strong on the defense of our nation, and we are strong supporters of our military and the men and women who volunteer to serve. Being a former U.S. Marine myself, I would not be part of our small Party if that were not the case.
As defenders of our fighting men and women, Libertarians see the initiation of force (including preemptive warfare) as an abuse of our military as well as a destructive to our national interests and history.
We supported action against the Taliban in Afghanistan as that was a direct response to acts of terror. However, invading a nation based upon a perceived threat, whether real or not, is clearly unjust.
While we have been vocal in our opposition to the invasion and occupation of Iraq, our government and the leadership within the Republican and Democratic parties have remained inept and complacent.
There is a reason for this which should be saddening to you. Both Republicans and Democrats only interest is retaining power for their own benefit.
If Republicans, lead by George W. Bush, were to admit failure in Iraq and withdraw the troops they would lose the confidence of their base and the GOP would crumble.
In contract, Democrats, instead of taking action, stand back in silence as the situation in Iraq worsens. They see every injured or slain soldier is a percentage point of gain in their vote totals.
I know this is cynical and even maddening but that is the reality of the situation.
Unless there is significant change within our government, this destructive dynamic of the two-party system will remain.
As I stated above, Republicans and Democrats exist to maintain power for their own benefit. We seek to grasp power for the benefit of our nation. We need you to make that happen.
If you believe the Iraq war was wrong and support the principles of smaller government, fewer taxes and more freedom, then I ask you to join us today.
Below are a few actions that you can take right now to further our cause. Please take the time today -- right now -- to complete one of these tasks while becoming an official member of the Libertarian Party.
I appreciate your time and attention and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have by calling 1-800-Elect-Us.
Sincerely,
Shane Cory
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee
While this was for an audience in America, the Alvarez Galloso News Hour decided that Europe must learn about alternatives to the two party system. After all, every decision made by Republicans and Democrats are affecting the world.
