Hawaii and Independence
HAWAII AND THE DESIRE FOR INDEPENDENCE
In the series of states that have thought about seceding from the United States, Hawaii is another state. In fact, Hawaii [like Alaska] is the only state not located in the Continental USA. Hawaii is unlike other states since it has a large Asian Presence.
It was not like that in the beginning. Hawaii was around with the presence of Native Hawaiians until the islands were discovered by British Explorer James Cook in 1779.
Afterwards, Europeans started developing an interest in the Hawaiian Islands. Russia even flirted with the idea of a tropical paradise. The Hawaiians responded by forming a unified kingdom under Kamehameha I in the late 18th Century.
This was not enough for the Europeans as they forced Kamehameha’s successors into signing treaties conceding land. They had the force to back their claims. The Europeans brought with them diseases and workers from China and Japan. The Hawaiians were like the Cubans in Cuba or the Latins [as well as other minorities] in America, strangers in their own land.
Finally, the USA started buying property in Hawaii. In 1891, Queen Lilioukalani started her reign with the intention of expelling foreigners only to have her reign cut short by a Coup [1893] directed by US Anglo Saxon Businessman Sanford Dole who proclaimed the Republic of Hawaii. Since 1893, Hawaii went from a Colonial Republic to Colony [dressed as a territory and then a State].
The Hawaiians were prohibited from using their own language and culture except for “tourist purposes”. The Hawaiians were forced to live in their own ghettoes. The Western Powers and the Imported Population enjoyed the luxuries denied to the people of Hawaii.
Finally with the beginning of the 21st Century, a group of Hawaiians have been vocal in preserving their language and culture despite attempts by the Republicans and Democrats to suppress it. More have called for Independence with Hawaii being a Free Trade Zone [a tropical Switzerland]. There has been one common denominator, the restoration of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawai’i which was the legitimate law before Dole’s De Facto Takeover in 1893.
It is hoped that one day, Hawai’i will be able to regain its independence and sovereignty

A MESSAGE FROM ONE: MAKE POVERTY HISTORY
Subject: Help make poverty history!
Hi,
I just sent a message urging the IMF to fulfill a promise they made to cancel Liberia's debt. Right now they are saddled with $4.5 billion of debt that was accumulated under corrupt dictator Samuel Doe. If the IMF were to fulfill its promise to cancel this debt the democratic government could dedicate resources to fighting poverty and rebuilding their country after 14 years of civil war.
You can send an email to the IMF here: http://www.one.org/liberia/
Thanks for taking action with me
