UEFA President Michel Platini has told the BBC that he needs to be “convinced about the ability of England to host a World Cup in 2018”. He further stated that he would “look with interest in the bids of Russia and the Netherlands”.
Platini is out of touch with reality. England has not hosted a World Cup since 1966 and while a lot has changed, football has not. UEFA and FIFA have changed since the likes of Blatter and Platini tend to live in Ivory Towers issuing nonsensical statements that would be laughed off if these were not the heads of big Football Governing Bodies.
It appears that Platini has forgotten the savagery with which the supporters of England’s National Team had to deal with when England played Russia. England has been able to tackle the hooliganism head on and at least approve of some rules to rid clubs of hooliganism.
Personally, Platini is ready to retire as head of UEFA and Blatter is ready to leave FIFA. They have been in their posts for such a long time. Being in a position of authority for a long time tends to cloud judgement.
