The federal government needs to get real with the Real ID Act

Washington, D.C. - While Friday's press conference with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff outlined new steps towards implementing federally mandated requirements for state-issued driver's licenses, the Libertarian Party is calling to scrap the program altogether. "It's time for the federal government to get real with the Real ID," says Libertarian Party Executive Director, Shane Cory.

"The program is an unmitigated disaster," says Cory, "and one the federal government fails to recognize. The federal government can prattle all it wants about the benefits of a license that meets federal standards, but the states don't recognize the right of the federal government to tell them how to issue their licenses. It's a states' rights issue as much as it is a privacy issue."

The Real ID Act imposes costly federal mandates for procedures used by states in issuing driver's licenses. Despite the mandates, Congress provides no funding for implementation, leaving the states fully responsible for the expenses.

So far, 17 states have passed laws or resolutions rejecting the Real ID Act mandates imposed by DHS. These states include Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington. Twenty-one other states have either introduced legislation or had legislation pass in one chamber opposing the Real ID.

"Anything less than scrapping this offensive national identification card law is unacceptable," said former Congressman and current Libertarian National Committee board member Bob Barr while applauding the decision by DHS to further delay implementation of the Real ID Act. "The massive database that would be created by the Real ID Act, containing all manner of private information on citizens, is potentially one of the most privacy-invasive laws in the history of our country."

"Chertoff does not speak for most Americans like he says," says Andrew Davis, national media coordinator for the Libertarian Party. "He fails to understand that while Americans want their privacy protected, they want it protected from the government. Giving the government greater access to our information is what Americans are against."

The Libertarian Party believes the Real ID act is unconstitutional because it violates the Tenth Amendment, which delegates powers such as driver's licensing to the states. The LP also feels the Real ID act is an intrusion of a citizen's right to privacy from the government, and does little to prevent terrorism or illegal immigration--two of the chief justifications used by the Department of Homeland Security.

"What seems like a more plausible outcome of the Real ID?" asks Cory. "A terrorist attack is thwarted because the attacker can't get a fake ID, or Americans are exposed to increased identity theft and privacy risks?"

I feel discriminated against every time I hear of a book prize contest or
similar literary event, only to learn that I'm disqualified on the basis of
my book being self-published. I took every precaution to make sure my books
were the best they could be. I worked hard on getting them printed at a
good price. Yet I keep running up against the same prejudice each time I
want to promote my books. I feel like the literati are treating me like an
untouchable and a lepper. The latest excuse given to me, when I wanted to
be included in an e-book of Alberta authors was that I wasn't published by a
"recognized" publishing house. I was told that there are so many authors
that a line had to be drawn somewhere.

Only a few books are published each year by these corporations. They reject
thousands of manuscripts and only publish the ones which they figure will
earn them money. I can understand that but I've been told that these
publishers believe that self-published books are inferior, filled with
errors and shoddily put together. To me, this is just the same as saying
that people with dark skin are inferior or that disabled folks are less than
human. I hope my books become famous so I can rub it in that those who
rejected my books missed out on being the ones to publish my work.

While there are some exceptions, American Idol promotes mediocre talent with the presence of judges who have nothing else to do but pass their so called judgment on who is the worst. The few times I have seen American Idol, I end up turning off the television and turning on my shortwave radio or my computer in order to appreciate true entertainment.

American Idol and Reality TV are the components of democracy that the Republicans and Democrats want to export to all of the nations of the world. The intention is to numb the brain and then fill it with trash TV.

Even in the USA, a person can appreciate real talent in the restaurants, night clubs, and other venues. The other venues are WebPages where music is downloaded for a price. In fact, there are many programmes in the Internet that are superior to American Idol and showcase the talent that exists in America but are not shown by the big moguls.

Radio Free Texas is a radio station in the Internet which could be received via the Windows Media Player and highlights the true talent of Texas instead of the mindlessness of Jessica Simpson or others who were discovered either in Reality TV or American Idol.

Another example of real talent is Nil Lara who is a Cuban American Singer Songwriter born in New Jersey. His music is the real thing but the Executives do not like to hear the song "Money That Makes the Monkey Dance". The Executives prefer the talents of a singer who sings off key or the female singer who has the good body but the lack of any talent.

The people should do themselves a favour and find true American Talent in the Radio and in the Computer because the Modern Day Executives of the TV Stations do not have the desire to broadcast talent. They want money and ratings.

Let us start with Big Brother in England with Shilpa Shetty and her being subjected to taunts by Jade Goody, Jo'O Meara, Danielle Lloyd, and Jack Tweed. It was a scene which showed people at their worst and damaged the reputation of Channel 4 of England in the eyes of the world. Having seen Jade Goody, Jo'O Meara, Danielle Lloyd, and Jack Tweed mocking Shilpa Shetty for being Indian was racist and a disgrace. I still think Jade Goody, Jo'O Meara, Danielle Lloyd, and Jack Tweed got off too easy. Jade Goody, Jo'O Meara, Danielle Lloyd, and Jack Tweed [as well as the producers of Big Brother deserved a pie in the face and cancellation of the show.

It is not fair to talk about England without talking about the USA. Reality TV programmes such as Wife Swapping encourages adultery. The Simple Life of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie encourage people to be total idiots. Survivor [which at one time divided people amongst their ethnic groups] were programmes which inflamed the ethnic and racial tensions that exist in America.In fact, it is these programmes that have accentuated the moral decline in Western Society including the USA directly and/or indirectly.

What do the Executives say about these accusations. The Television Moguls say that "all of this is fun and games" while counting their money. They could care less.

It is because of Reality TV that the Islamic World has been able to win the hearts and minds of people. Many of the TV Programmes in the Islamic World transmitted in English via Satellite TV have shown an alternative to Reality TV with words of wisdom, family oriented entertainment, and news that informs. I know many people in America who have turned off Television in America and turned on to Press TV, PTV, and Al Jazeera.

China, India and Vietnam [with other TV Stations in Asia] have had family oriented entertainment as an alternative to the banality of Western Private TV. CCTV, CRI, VOV, as well as Merinews have also served as alternatives to a Western Society that has turned off God and Spiritual Beings in favour of the latest scandals from Reality TV and Hollywood.

The Baltic States [Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania], Romania [via Radio Romania International], Portugal [via Portuguese Radio and Television, and Russia [with the Voice Of Russia] is also transmitting Radio and TV programmes of a Pro Family Nature with specials on the family, Orthodox Christmas, and musical programmes. Many people with satellite, Internet, and Shortwave Radios can listen to and appreciate these programmes.

Not all is lost, The Writers Guild of America [at least some of their members] has complained about having to "write trash TV" and "sacrifice their dignity for a low salary". This is not only unfair economically for these writers but is a waste of their talent.
