Jan 20: Speaking in Worcester, Massachusetts, Libertarian Presidential candidate George Phillies said for Martin Luther King day "It was Martin Luther King's great triumph to fulfill the promise of the 14th Amendment. The end of the Civil War brought to Americans the promise 'No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States'. It took the Freedom Marches and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to make that promise real.
"The American Civil Rights Movement began over two hundred years, ago with many events in my home state of Massachusetts," Phillies continued, recalling his recent speech at the Fresno City College Presidential forum. "In 1776, the American Revolution began at Concord. In 1780, Massachusetts became the first state to abolish slavery. In a splendid piece of judicial activism, Chief Justice William Cushing interpreted our State Constitution's statement 'all men are born free and equal' to mean 'slavery is inconsistent with our...Constitution.'
Then, in 1861, the southern slaveholders rebelled," he continued. "Thousands of Massachusetts men -- and, as we now know, more than a few women -- flocked to the colors to defend our country. They waged the sacred crusade that ended the abomination of slavery.
"Americans can be proud of that achievement of our forefathers. Our forefathers quashed the rebellion of the slaveholders. Then, in 1868, the 13th Amendment washed away the blot of slavery. The 14th Amendment crushed the racist 'States Rights' doctrine that states have the power to take away a person's rights and liberties. But it was not until Martin Luther King's great crusade almost a full century later that this Constitutional promise became a reality.
"Sometimes I'm asked whether it is worthwhile to run as a third party candidate. I am immediately reminded of another third party. The anti-slavery Liberty Party of 170 years ago never elected a President. In the end, their abolitionist doctrines were gloriously triumphant. However, third parties do not always lose. After all, our two original major parties were the Federalists and the Whigs. The Whigs and Federalists are as extinct as the wooly mammoth. They were replaced by the 'third' parties who my Libertarian Party now aims to replace."

El Futbol Balonpie en los EEUU comienza el 2008 con victorias.

En El Torneo de Las Cuatro Naciones en la China, el equipo feminino de futbol EEUU derrotaron a sus rivales China, Finlandia, y Canada para ganar el campeonato. El Equipo de Futbol Femenino de los EEUU lograron superar obstaculos con jugadores como Amy Rodriguez, Heather O’ Reilly, y Lindsey Tarplay. Ellos merecen todo reconocimiento bajo el liderazgo de Pia Sundhage y Christine Rampone.

En su primer juego del 2008, el equipo masculine de futbol estadounidense anotaron su primera victoria contra Suecia. Durante el juego, Donovan y Robinson lograron otro capitulo en la historia del futbol estadounidense. Donovan logro ser el jugador con mas anotaciones de goles en la historia del futbol estadounidense. Robinson logro ser el jugador numero cuarenta y cuatro en anotar un gol bajo un limite [o lo que llaman en EEUU un cap].

Mis felicitaciones para el equipo estadounidense de futbol.

USA Womens Team Champion in Four Nations Tournament

The last game of the USA Women’s Team in China was against the Host Country. Before a crowd of 3000 in Guangdong Olympic Sports Center Stadium; Guangzhou, China, the USA played China.

In spite of the substitutions, China and USA played a game that was uneventful but filled with tension. China should be commended for having a disciplined and organized team that did not want to give in to a USA Team that was powerful in its own right.

Regardless, it was Shannon Boxx and Becky Sauerbrunn that stole the show with a goal during the 77th minute of the game. While Shannon Boxx received the us soccer.com Woman of the Match Award, the US Women’s Team should do more in reinforcing their tenacity and discipline.

My Congratulations to the USA Women’s Football [Soccer] Team in its victory in the Four Nations Tournament for 2008. I would also like to congratulate Heather O’ Reilly for being the Best Player, Lindsey Tarpley for being the Top Scorer, Zhang Yanru of China for being the Best Goalkeeper, and Pia Sundhage for Being the Best Coach.

While the USA was awarded the Fair Play Award, I am of the opinion that China should have won the award taking into account that they played according to the FIFA Regulations. In fact during the whole tournament, there was no evidence of misconduct. If China did not win the award for fair play, it should have at least been shared with the USA.
