La Violencia en Zimbabwe

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-08 - 21:03:58

Mugabe & Zimbabwe Series 5

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-08 - 20:07:41

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union wants to protest but states that they are afraid that Mugabe will impose martial law. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has met with the Congress of South African Trade Union [COSATU] and the Federation of Unions of South Africa [FEDUSA] to discuss the situation in Zimbabwe. COSATU condemned the attitude of the government of South Africa while FEDUSA has urged calm. I wander if FEDUSA would say the same thing if FIFA [The International Football [Soccer] Body] were to change the venue of the 2010 World Cup.

In other developments, Mr. Tendai Biti [Secretary General of the MDC] has asked African States to intervene before “there are dead bodies in Harare”. Mr. Biti has expressed his fear that Mugabe could declare a state of martial law using the assaults created by his followers as a pretext. I was hoping for a peaceful resolution but my worst fears are being realized and it is not surprising. Mugabe and people like him are [in the majority] of a totalitarian bent with the concept of “Me, Me, and I”.

Mugabe & Zimbabwe

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-08 - 18:53:36

I have just received more information in which the Zimbabwe High Court has decided to hear the case of releasing the Presidential Election Results presented by the MDC. This news comes against the backdrop of militias and ZANU-PF supporters rearming. Up to 100 opposition supporters have been assaulted in different areas of Zimbabwe and 60 farmers have fled their homes. While this is the actual reaction of Mugabe and is not surprising, it is important that there is publicity about what is happening.

Houston Dynamos: A Personal Reflection

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-08 - 16:50:16

The Houston Dynamos have been two time champions of the MLS Cup in 2006 and 2007. The year 2008 is all too different and it reminds me of the song by the Monkees after they reunited in 1987: "That Was Then and This Is Now". The MLS [Major League Soccer] Season for 2008 began on a bad note for the Houston Dynamos. The Houston Dynamos won half of their games in February and March 2008 during the Preseason Games. In April 2008, the Houston Dynamos scored no points in their game against Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica and was able to save themselves from a humiliating defeat at the Robertson Stadium in Dallas Texas with a last minute goal by Geoff Cameron with a little help from Brian Ching. Regardless, the score between the Houston Dynamos and FC Dallas was 3-3.

If the Houston Dynamos want to win the MLS Cup three straight times, they have to organize themselves into a team that can possess the ball and the game. At the present time, the Houston Dynamos are suffering from the mentality of "We can win" without actually doing the things necessary such as taking advantage of an opponent's weakness. The Houston Dynamos also appear to suffer from a lack of organization, coordination, and discipline that is necessary in any successful bid for the MLS Cup. It also did not help that the Houston Dynamos lost to the New England Revolution on the 29th of March 2008 with Steve Ralston, Adam Cristman and Sainey Nyassi scoring for the New England Revolution while the Houston Dynamos were disorganized. The New England Revolution's three to zero victory over the Houston Dynamos in that game was proof as to the lack of coordination, discipline, and organization within the team.

While everything within the MLS [Major League Soccer] Season is possible, the idea of the Houston Dynamos winning the MLS Cup three times in a row is not one of them. The Houston Dynamos are not playing the same way they did in 2006 and 2007. The Houston Dynamos should remember the saying that "if something is not broken do not fix it". The Houston Dynamos should stick to the plan that won them the MLS Cup two times in a row. Regardless, I will leave a window open to the fact that Michael Ching could be used as an inspiration to start winning games and become organized.

Phillies: Barack Obama Calls For Segregation

Barack Obama Calls For Segregation

Worcester, Mass, April 7: Libertarian Presidential candidate George Phillies today blasted Senator Barack Obama for endorsing segregation based on sexual orientation in a recent campaign missive to LGBTQ voters from the Obama campaign.

From: http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/alexokrent/gGggJS :

Obama: I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment.

"It's particularly disappointing, though not surprising, that the Democratic front-runner would embrace separate and unequal' while providing an Orwellian discourse on 'equality,'" said Dr. Phillies.
"Obama provides a laundry list of other things he promises he'll try, maybe possibly, if he can get around to it, to get done as president:

Obama: Unlike Senator Clinton, I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) a position I have held since before arriving in the U.S. Senate. While some say we should repeal only part of the law, I believe we should get rid of that statute altogether.
"So has the Senator introduced legislation to do this in the Senate now? Not as of this writing.

Obama: I have also called for us to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell...
"Has the Senator supported companion legislation in the Senate for the already-House-introduced MREA that would end the anti-gay policy? Nope.
Obama: I have worked to improve the Uniting American Families Act so we can afford same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as married couples in our immigration system.

"Actually, Obama has done nothing other than declare he opposes UAFA because it will 'facilitate immigration fraud.' That's quite a hilarious contention -- that a few hundred people would slip through the system under UAFA -- when thousands get marriages of convenience under the existing marriage system.

"Once again, Barack Obama is demanding a separate, more difficult arrangement for same-gender couples than for heterosexual ones. And he's done nothing legislatively or otherwise related to UAFA other than refuse to cosponsor the bill.

Obama: I will never compromise on my commitment to equal rights for all LGBT Americans. But neither will I close my ears to the voices of those who still need to be convinced.

"In other words, Obama will send a couple of open letters to gay people when he wants their votes, but will insist that anti-gay discrimination is a legitimate 'alternative choice' that deserves equal consideration.

"Imagine if a presidential candidate had made similar commitments to 'not close his ears' to the voices of KKK supporters in the 1960s vis-a-vis equal rights for black Americans.

"Sorry, Senator, but you're all talk. An empty suit. You've done nothing for LGBTQ people in your short Senate career, and your laughable 'open letter' to gay people underscores the futility of supporting your campaign for gay people who want real equality.

"Gay people want a candidate who will always stand up for equality under the law and the 14th Amendment, regardless of the opinions of 'those who still need to be convinced.' We want equal treatment under the law -- not separate and unequal 'compromises.' And we want politicians who back their commitments with legislation, not pleas for support after years of failure and inaction.

"In short, gay people want a president who would do what a Libertarian president will do.

The Mugabe Saga Continues

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-08 - 15:10:25

I am not surprised at the actions of Mugabe [the assault on the 80 opposition activists].

According to the IHT [International Herald Tribune], Barry Bearak of the New York Times was released on bail but to a hospital after sustaining falls in the floor of his prison cell. This was according to a declaration by his lawyer Harrison Nkomo. Dileepan Sivapathasundaram of the National Democracy Institute [and a US Citizen] has been released to US Diplomatic Custody although he has to report to the police on a daily basis. It has been agreed that Mugabe is not going to go soon but if the news were to completely vanish from the front pages, Mugabe and company may get away with murder and the country may implode.

As already mentioned in a separate article, even the opposition inside South Africa has criticized South African President Mbeki for being "naive or distorting on purpose the reality in Zimbabwe"
