Vigil in London for Zimbabwe

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-19 - 16:37:43

According to SW Radio Africa, there was going to be a vigil in front of the Zimbabwean Embassy in London, England, Great Britain on the 19th of April 2008 from 2:00PM to 6:00PM London Time. The purpose of the protest is to repudiate the recounting of votes in Zimbabwe. The Vigil is also launching a petition for EU Countries to suspend aid and help to SADC Member Countries and replacing it with aid to the poor of Zimbabwe. Zimbawean Stars living in the UK such as Thomas Mapfumo, Willard Karanga, and Lucky Moyo will be present in this vigil. I hope that something comes out of this vigil but only timw will tell. The important thing is that there is publicity about the situation in Zimbabwe. Even the South African Communist Party [who supported ZANU-PF in the past] has condemned the Mugabe Government.

Zimbabwe: Vote Recounts and Possible Abductions

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-19 - 16:05:43

What is imperative is for all opposition parties to close ranks and make the wishes of the Zimbabwean electorate a reality. In any run-off or re-run of the Presidential Election the support for Morgan Tsvangirai should be total and unconditional. There will be neither equivocation nor ambiguity on that subject. He represents the change that Zimbabweans voted for. The people spoke on the 29th of March. They seek no accommodation with the Dictator or any of his manifestations. All democratic forces must stand with the people in pursuit of the total annihilation of Robert Mugabe and all he stands for.

An Official for the Constituency of Gokwe-Kabuyuni told the AFP that the recount in that constituency has not begun. According to Reporters in the Constituency of Zvimba North and Goromonzi West, the recount has not begun. The ZEC [Zimbabwe Electoral Commission] has stated that they will not comment on the delay.

According to SW Radio Africa [the Shortwave Radio Station transmitting to Zimbabwe from studios in London], Farai Zavidse [the MDC Chief Elections Agent for Chivi Masvingo Province in Zimbabwe] disappeared on the 17th of April 2008. Farai Zavidze was an outspoken critic of the Mugabe Government.
Bernard Chiondegwa [the MDC Candidate for Parliament in Chivi North] thinks that Farai Zavidse may have been abducted either by Government Agents, ZANU-PF [Mugabe] Agents, or ZANU-PF [Mugabe] Supporters.

The Case Against a Boycott of the 2008 Olympics

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-19 - 04:06:48

I am hearing the news about the European Leaders boycotting the Beijing Olympics of 2008 as a form of protest against China. While many people are thinking about boycotting as a feel good option, boycotting will never be an effective deterrant. The only people who lose in a boycott are the athletes and the people. The Chinese Government will not be affected since it is a strong government overseeing a strong and developed economy. I have often wandered of the "Boycott Symptom" is a part of Anti Chinese Sentiment. After all, CNN has slandered China in one of its reports and did a half hearted apology which does not count.
Boycotts have never worked because human nature in its majority has the tendency to do the forbidden. When Carter boycotted the Moscow Olympics of 1980 in response to the Russian [Soviet] Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the opposite ocurred. People went to the Moscow Olympics in 1980. People in the United States of America defied the boycott by crossing the border into Canada and buying souvenirs of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. Others defied the boycott by crossing the border between the United States of America and Canada and going to Russia [at that time The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic] after purchasing their tickets from authorized representatives of Intourist [which was the authorized tourist agency of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics] and Aeroflot [which was the Soviet now Russian Airline].

Since Jesus Christ once said: "He who is without sin cast the first stone", I myself disobeyed the Carter Boycott of the Moscow Olympics of 1980. I am also proud that I disobeyed the Carter boycott of 1980. I did it by writing to my family in Cuba [who I have yet to know] and asked for stamps of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. My stamps arrived in one of my letters from my Cuban relatives. I was also a listener of Shortwave Radio Stations and used to practice the hobby called DXing [sending reception reports in order to obtain post cards, stamps, pennants, and even Long Play/Extended Play/45 RPM Records]. I wrote to Radio Bucharest [now Radio Romania International], Radio Budapest, Radio Prague, Radio Polonia, and Radio Berlin International [the defunct Shortwave Radio Station of the now defunct East Germany]. I explained to these radio stations my dilemna and they sent me stamps and other souvenirs of the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
After explaining about how I circumvented a boycott, it reinforces why a boycott will never work. As long as people in authority prohibit a certain action, there will be people who will find a way to circumvent a boycott or even violate a law in order to do what is prohibited. The reason is the challenge.

Chinese Ship An Yue Jiang Going to Mozambique?

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-19 - 03:59:55

According to the BBC and an Independent Human Rights Group that is monitoring the Chinese Vessel An Yue Jiang, the Vessel is heading towards Maputo, Mozambique with the hope of transporting the arms to Zimbabwe via Mozambique. The Director of the Southern Africa Litigation Centre [Nicole Fritz] announced that she will pursue the matter of the An Yue Jiang with Mozambique. It was premature to say that a victory has ocurred even though the South African Labour Unions deserve praise.

Chinese Ship in South Africa Returns to China

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-04-19 - 03:40:57

According to The Times, the Chinese Ship which was carrying arms for Zimbabwe was forced to return to China. The reason was that the South African Labour Unions refused to unload the cargo destined for Zimbabwe. The South African President Mbeki said that the transaction was between two sovereign countries and that it was not his business. The decision of the South African Unions to not unload the cargo from the Chinese Ship was a victory for those who say no to politicians who deny the existence of a problem.
There have been reports of the presence of Chinese Military Personnel in Mutare. According to sources, they have checked into the local Holiday Inn along with seventy military personnel from Zimbabwe.
