Burma or Myanmar by Avaaz

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-05-09 - 18:15:54

Dear friends,

In the wake of a massive cyclone, a shocking 100,000 Burmese may be dead. More are missing. A million are homeless.

But what's happening in Burma is not just a natural disaster--it's also a catastrophe of bad leadership.

Burma's brutal and corrupt military junta failed to warn the people, failed to evacuate any areas, and suppressed freedom of communication so that Burmese people didn't know the storm was coming when the rest of the world did. Now the government is failing to respond to the disaster and obstructing international aid organizations.

Humanitarian relief is urgently needed, but Burma's government could easily delay, divert or misuse any aid. Yesterday the International Burmese Monks Organization, including many leaders of the democracy protests last fall, launched a new effort to provide relief through Burma's powerful grass roots network of monasteries--the most trusted institutions in the country and currently the only source of housing and support in many devastated communities. Click below to help the Burmese people with a donation and see a video appeal to Avaaz from a leader of the monks:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/burma_cyclone/16.php

Giving to the monks is a smart, fast way to get aid directly to Burma's people. Governments and international aid organizations are important, but face challenges--they may not be allowed into Burma, or they may be forced to provide aid according to the junta's rules. And most will have to spend large amounts of money just setting up operations in the country. The monks are already on the front lines of the aid effort--housing, feeding, and supporting the victims of the cyclone since the day it struck. The International Burmese Monks Organization will send money directly to each monastery through their own networks, bypassing regime controls.

Last year, more than 800,000 of us around the world stood with the Burmese people as they rose up against the military dictatorship. The government lost no time then in dispatching its armies to ruthlessly crush the non-violent democracy movement--but now, as tens of thousands die, the junta's response is slow and threatens to divert precious aid into the corrupt regime's pockets.

The monks are unlikely to receive aid from governments or large humanitarian organizations, but they have a stronger presence and trust among the Burmese people than both. If we all chip in a little bit, we can help them to make a big difference. Click here to donate:

With hope,

Ricken, Ben, Graziela, Paul, Iain, Veronique, Pascal, Galit and the whole Avaaz team

Keep the housing market a free market: Libertarian Party

FROM THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY:
Keep the housing market a free market

Federal bailouts reward bad decisions at the taxpayers' expense

Washington, D.C. - In a statement issued today by Libertarian Party National Media Coordinator Andrew Davis, the Libertarian Party is urging the President to veto any housing bill sent to his desk that creates bailouts for the housing industry at the taxpayers' expense:

"Republicans and Democrats have come together to create a bipartisan measure that puts the American taxpayer on the line for risky loans and poor decisions. No person should be asked to pay for his neighbor's foolish choice to take on a mortgage he couldn't afford, or for a lender that makes a risky loan. What happened to individual responsibility? President Bush should veto any sort of legislation that seeks to manipulate the housing market with taxpayer-subsidized bailouts, or any sort of bill that prevents buyers and lenders from taking responsibility for their decisions. The housing market should be a free market, where everybody faces the responsibility for the decisions they make without hanging the taxpayer out to dry. A second mortgage should not mean helping to take on your neighbor's."

The Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting www.LP.org. The Libertarian Party proudly stands for smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom.

Mike Munger for Governor of North Carolina 2008

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-05-09 - 17:24:19

At a time when the attention of the world was on the North Carolina Primary between Obama and Clinton and people comment about the lack of real leaders in America, a lone voice in the wilderness and a real leader has been crying for recognition in a state where the laws governing ballot access is among the most rigid in the United States of America. The lone voice and real leader is that of Michael Munger and he is running for Governor of North Carolina under the banner of the Libertarian Party of his state.

Michael Munger is a Professor of Political Science at Duke University who was born in Florida and has lived in North Carolina since his youth. He has also worked as an Assistant Professor of Political Science in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Assistant Professor at the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics at Dartmouth College. Dr. Munger has also worked as a Staff Economist with the Federal Trade Commission and as a member of the Wake County, North Carolina Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Citizens' Liaison Committee.

Michael Munger is of the belief that North Carolina has been suffering from the shackles of the Republicans and Democrats for a very long time especially in the areas of Education, Municipal Aggression, and Electoral Reform.

In the areas of Education, Dr. Munger is a believer in Individual Choice and programs that would place Individual Choice in Education in the hands of Parents and Students. Dr. Munger also believes that an overextended bureaucracy such as exists in North Carolina hampers education and that the process to certify teachers and schools should be based on common sense instead of politics or laws that border on the ridiculous.

Before discussing Dr. Munger's programme about municipal aggression, we must define what municipal aggression is. Municipal Aggression is practiced in many areas of the United States of America and consists of one city taking over an unincorporated area around the city using archaic rules and without the consent of the voters. One of the promises by Dr. Munger is to stop Municipal Aggression without the consent of the people who are on the receiving end of it.

Electoral Reform lies in the heart of Dr. Munger's campaign. For those who think a vote for the alternative parties is a wasted vote, I have a question. Why do the Republicans and Democrats waste the time and effort to block other political parties from campaigning on an equal basis if they think a vote for them is a wasted vote? Why do the Republicans and Democrats talk about exporting democracy to the world but do not practice it at home when it comes to alternative political parties? The reason is that the Republicans and Democrats are no longer interested in the will of the people; they are beholden to themselves and to special interests. Dr. Munger promises transparency and innovation of a state government with new voices and new concepts as a response to a status quo that no longer is in contact with the people except for sound bites. I do not know what will happen in the long run but I hope that the people of North Carolina and the United States of America would find a way to reject the three choices that they have and understand that other alternative parties exists.

Nielsen Protest/Nut Delivery from Jericho fans

by AlvarezGalloso @ 2008-05-09 - 15:34:14

Jericho's Nutty Fans Protest Nielsen's Ratings System

Why we fight:

The ex-CBS drama Jericho has fallen victim for the second time to cancellation based on inaccurate and antiquated Nielsen ratings. Network TV executives have long been aware of Nielsen's errors. In 1997, the NY Times reported that Don Ohlmeyer, then president of NBC's West Coast division, was blunt in his criticism. ''I don't trust their numbers at all,'' he said. ''They're trying to measure 21st-century technology with an abacus.'' http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E01E2D61739F933A25750C0A961958260
The methodology of TV viewing has changed drastically since then and Nielsen has failed to keep up with the times. Nielsen reported Jericho had a live viewing audience averaging 6 million viewers per week during Season 2. Even if that number had been accurate, it failed to take into account the new media options such as Amazon, Itunes, and even Xbox live downloads. Jericho was consistently in the top ten for downloads as well as the top 15 shows per week reported by DVR. Live DirectTV numbers sharply contradicted the ratings reported by Nielsen. Nielsen also did not factor in the millions of weekly streams for each episode on sites such as Fancast and CBS.com. A CBS executive noted March 18th that the ratings share would be increased almost 1 percentage point had their online viewing numbers alone been factored into the ratings.
http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticleHomePage&art_aid=78684
Even without factoring in the new media, Nielsen's ratings system is inaccurate. The sample of approximately 10,000 homes chosen to represent American homes has many flaws, including the fact that we are estimated to now have at least 100,000,000 televisions in the U.S. You may research more about how Nielsen samples viewing habits here:
http://www.helium.com/items/990477-practically-everyone-heard-terms

Nielsen ratings even leave out most in the largest minority group in America. Jericho fans were proud to have the positive role of Major Beck played by Latino actor Esai Morales. "Just as Nielsen's inaccuracy at measuring U.S. born Hispanics contributed to the George Lopez Shows' premature demise on ABC, it could also be a contributing factor to the inaccuracies of Jericho, given Esai Morales' starring role and big following among young, U.S. Latinos" stated Robert G. Rose, Founder of www.HelpChangeTV.com, a grassroots organization demanding Nielsen Media Research address their inaccuracies and improper sampling of 2nd and 3rd generation Latinos. The number of Latinos excluded by Nielsen are staggering and affect as many as 65% of young Hispanics. Mr. Rose further stated, "Shows such as Ugly Betty or Jericho could conceivably have 20-30% more viewers that are not being counted as a result. For a show that is on the renewal fence, those are precious eyeballs that are not being counted" .

Nielsen has been an unchecked monopoly for years and recently has been reported to be laying off workers and outsourcing the jobs to India, since the 10 year, 1.2 billion dollar outsourcing contract with the Indian corporation TATA began in 1997. Their harsh treatment of American workers has been chronicled here: http://jerichomonster.blogspot.com/ Many in the local community are outraged that the reported tax breaks and grants for local hiring initiatives previously given to Nielsen have instead eliminated many of those jobs or resulted in jobs outsourced to Indian workers.

Jericho fans have decided to protest the inaccurate ratings that led to a second cancellation by sending nuts to Nielsen's ratings center in Oldsmar, Florida. You can read more by googling "Nuts to Nielsen" and if you want to participate or buy Nuts to Nielsen you can do that here: http://www.mickeyspeanuts.com/index.html Jericho fans have requested that the nuts be donated to a local food bank, in the classy fashion of last year's delivery of 50,000 pounds of peanuts to CBS studios. The date of the protest and nut delivery is available via inquiry for live coverage.
Fans are also working hard to find Jericho a new home by a massive letter writing campaign to possible new homes for the show, sending DVDs to the troops, funding full page ads in Variety Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter , and many other unique initiatives. The recent ad in Variety magazine was also followed by a delivery of Jericho signature peanuts, however, this year they featured the phrases "Save Jericho" and "Nuts to Nielsen" on each pallet of nuts. Read more about Variety's gracious reaction to the delivery here:
http://weblogs.variety.com/on_the_air/2008/04/jericho-fans-nu.html

Nielsen's flaws may have led to Jericho's second demise but the fans will not go down without a fight. The evolution of Nielsen is required in order to keep it's monopolistic hold on TV advertisers in the age of new media. It's own faulty system recently reported that the networks have lost 1 out of every 5 viewers. http://www.showbizdata.com/news/46715/NETWORKS-LOSE-ONE-OUT-OF-FIVE-VIEWERS
Have they truly lost 1 out of 5 viewers? Or have they simply lost the ability to count the new tech savvy viewers such as the loyal Jericho fans and left out large segments of our population from consideration of their viewing habits entirely? Jericho Rangers have started a revolution to hopefully bring the show to a new home for season 3 and to provide it with an accurate ratings system to keep it there for years to come.

3. LP NATIONAL CONVENTION

The Libertarian Party National Convention (www.lpconvention.org) will
be held from May 22-26 in Denver. That comes before the Libertarian
Party of Texas state convention, which by state law has to be held on the
second Saturday in June (June 14, 2008).

The State Libertarian Party Executive Committee of Texas (SLECT) met on
Saturday, February 2 to approve a list of over 40 delegates to the
convention. SLECT met again on May 4 to increase the number of delegates
to 74. Since the total allocation of delegates for Texas is 69, some
of the delegates are listed as alternates. Some of the delegates have
not yet confirmed they will attend and additional delegates could be
added for those that do not attend.

As many items of interesting and important business occur at these
conventions, most in attendance desire to be credentialed as delegates so
that they can participate and cast votes. Texas typically has a large
allotment of seats for delegates and has not filled its delegation at
previous conventions.

Our bylaws require that delegates are affiliated with the Libertarian
Party by one of the following criteria:
1. Affiliating with the Libertarian Party of Texas by signing the Oath
of Affiliation form with your county LP organization. In cases where
there is not a county LP chair, one could be appointed.
2. Those that qualify as a member of the National Party as defined in
Article 5 of the national bylaws. Either a signer of the "non
initiation" oath or a membership level of sustaining or greater would be
consider affiliating with the national party.

The current list of delegates that meet these requirements are:

Mike Burris (TRAVIS)
Raymond Carr (BURNET)

4. OHIO AND FLORIDA CHALLENGE TEXAS

As the Libertarian Party of Texas has grown significantly and continues
to break records in its achievements, the following notice from the
Libertarian Party of Ohio caught the interest of our state chair (a
former Ohio resident):

"Ohio party fastest growing among Libertarians"
http://mail.lpo.org/lists/Announce/Message/327.html?Language=

Dixon's reply to the Chair of the Ohio LP (Kevin Knedler) is below:

To: Kevin Knedler, Chair Ohio LP

Kevin,
I am very happy to take on the challenge. I am going to get Texas
ahead of you, and I want you to try to pass us up. Competition is good!

Patrick J Dixon
Chair, Libertarian Party of Texas
www.LPTexas.org

Additionally, Florida wants to take us on. This message was received
from Karl Dickey, the state chair of the Florida Libertarian Party:

OK guys,

I want to challenge you to the first one to 1,000 members (as per
National's numbers).

What do you say? What's the wager?

The response was:

Subject: Re: Gentleman's Bet

Challenge! Heck yes, I like challenges. Kevin Knedler from Ohio is
claiming to be the fastest growing state in the LP, and I will take him
on.

I like Wes’ idea; let’s settle it in Denver. I believe the numbers we
are talking about are the “ACTIVE MEMBER” stats from national. As of
the end of 2007, TX stood at 758 and FL stood at 817. The other
statistic is TOTAL ACTIVE which includes members that pay the sustaining
membership but do not sign the oath/pledge. The TOTAL ACTIVE end of year
was TX 807 and FL 865. I would be OK with either criteria.

I would insist that the winning side mention to any delegate from the
losing side that they lost, as Wes suggested. And the beers would be
paid by the losing side to the winning side’s delegates up to the number
of credentialed delegates present in Denver. Presently Texas has about
40 people saying they would like to be delegates, so that would be
roughly $100 for non-premium beer. Of course I have expensive taste in
beer.

What do you say? Can we make it public?

Yours in Liberty,

Patrick J Dixon
